The Printmaker's Graphic Arts Studio "Workshop"
(Graphic Arts Colony "Smederevo")
The House of Culture, Smederevo, founded the Arts Colony
"Smederevo" in 1985 with the sponsorship of the Smederevo Iron Works
Factory, in order to promote the cultural life of the town and
community, and to affirm the graphic arts as well as the young artist
who have already graduated from the Art Academies from Belgrade and
Novi Sad.
According to the basic Rules of the Graphic Art Colony, which was
second to none of its kind in Serbia at the time, the participants are
obliged to print at least one work and leave three samples of printed
sheets to the courtesy of the Colony. The well-equipped graphic studio
workshop boasts two printmaker's hand-made presses, with optimum sizes
1,50x0,65m and 1,40x0,82m suited for intaglio printing. The sponsors
buy one of three samples made during the stay in the Colony, and the
invited artists are provided with free basic materials and well-equipped
workshop.
During the first decade of the successful and continual work of the
Colony, about eighty artists from all the former Yugoslav republics
participated. The usual terms for work and stay was scheduled between
2nd and 12ty September. The exhibition of the realised works was held
on October 15th, the city's Liberation day and is accompanied by a
professionally arranged catalogue, with a critical review by one of
the art critics and historians and with reproduced works. Within the
period of a full decade of its existence, the Graphic Arts Colony
swarmed with young, but distinctive graphic artists of almost all
prevailing tendencies of id 80's and early 90's. Various figurative
tendencies are combined with neo-abstract and pure expressive
individualities. A special place was devoted to the "guest artist of
the Colony", and this place was occasionally open to some merited and
fully experienced artist or older generation representatives, senior
professors, etc, or an artist who intensely experimented with the
medium.
Recently, the Graphic Arts Colony has tended to invite professional
printmakers from abroad. |
